How to Clean Your Stone or Concrete Patio

As with most things related to home ownership, your patio surfaces need regular cleaning to keep them looking their best and to maintain them for maximum longevity. Not all homeowners know that the patio is a space of the home that also needs cleaning. The following are recommendations on how to clean your type of patio.

For any surface, first, give your patio a good sweeping to brush away the dirt and leaves that have collected.

Natural Stone Patio
Hose off the patio and scrub stains using a detergent. Cleaners like Dawn or Ajax dishwashing liquid and a natural or synthetic bristle brush should do the trick.

To remove dark brown or black spots, moss, mold, and mildew from patios in shady or damp areas, scrub them with a bleach and water solution, mixing ¾ cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water in a 5-gallon bucket. Apply the bleach solution to the pre-wetted surface and reapply as needed to keep it wet for 5 minutes. Rinse the area thoroughly with plain water and let surfaces air dry.

Concrete Patios
Hose down your concrete patio with a garden hose and a spray nozzle that provides plenty of water pressure. For tough stains, you can use a natural or synthetic bristle scrub brush, plus a degreaser to remove oily spots near the grill. We don’t recommend using a wire brush because it can rust, leave rust stains on your patio, and scratch the surface of your concrete patio.

If your patio needs a bit more attention, mix a little detergent such as Dawn or Ajax dishwashing liquid with the water to help clean and revitalize the surface.

However, if your concrete patio is heavily discolored, consider calling a professional. They will apply a solution of muriatic acid on the patio to bring it back to life. You can choose to do the work yourself by purchasing the product at a home supply store. Make sure to wear protective clothing. Wear long pants, closed shoes, gloves, and goggles. You should also follow the instructions on the container as instructed.

Manufactured Paving Stones
The low maintenance required of manufactured paving stones really shines when it comes to cleaning your patio. All you need is to spray the patio using your garden hose and spray nozzle to spray away debris.
